Peter Diamandis (CEO of the XPRIZE foundation) spoke at IASA about how automated cars like the Google car will make auto insurance a thing of the past. He predicted that these cars will not have accidents and that we will use them Zipcar style, not own them. I would guess that he would say pretty much the same thing about flying cars - they will be required to have so much safety technology that few could afford to own them. The Jetsons must be living in a time of so much prosperity that advanced technology like flying cars is taken for granted - hmmm... time to buy some stock in Spacely Sprockets!

I wonder whether the safety specs featured in the Smart Fortwo will become federally mandated, just as airbags, seat belts, and fuel efficiency have been. This might provide easier pathways for insurers to accommodate for fuel efficiency and safety simultaneously.
